Martin Luther King Jr. and His Visit to Puerto Rico

Date:

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929. His name initially was Michael King Jr. He was a Minister at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, and also was known as a great leader of the Civil Right movement.

On December 1, 1955, the news came informing about a black woman that was arrested in Mongomery, Alabama, indicating that she was refusing to move from the front seat of a bus to the back row, to let a white male sit in the front, that according to the law in Alabama, at that time was prohibited that black people could sit in the front of any bus as part of the segregation laws. Her name was Rosa Louise McCauley Parks, also known as Rosa Parks, she later said that she was too tired to move to the back of the bus after coming from work.

After that event where she was arrested in particular, on December 5, 1955, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. decided to go to visit her in jail and he also was intervened and arrested by the police there, creating a massive protest from multiple sectors of society against the segregation law, and at that moment is where the Civil Rights movent established the beginning of its roots.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most outstanding leaders of the Civil Rights movement following his Christian beliefs, the civil disobedience, and the nonviolence movement of Mahatma Gandhi.

In 1962 and 1965 Dr. King visited the island of Puerto Rico, and according to one of the journalists who interviewed him, Mr. Onofre Jusino, Sr., Dr. King went to Puerto Rico on two occasions in support not only of his movement but also for the rights of the Puerto Ricans too, as part of the civil rights that he was looking for in the US for all.

In Puerto Rico, Dr. King visited the Interamerican University, which was known as The Polytechnical, in the city of San German, and there with the help of some translators including the journalist mentioned above, he gave a wonderful speech to the point that he was invited to give another conference at the University of Puerto Rico in the city of Rio Piedras, which he did in 1965. Dr. King made a great bond of solidarity with the Puerto Rican people and was in touch with them until he was assassinated on April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a great leader, motivator, passionate, brilliant, and the “father” of the Civil Rights movement and its law the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which was inspired by the extraordinary and monumental speech that he gave on August 28, 1963, in Washington, DC, known as, I Have a Dream…
